Warehouse Safety Hazards
Warehouse safety is an integral part of the industrial interface between the customers and the factory. It is a place that includes both raw and processed products, and many times the safety of a warehouse is often overlooked in many industries. Though a warehouse is not a place for any heavy machines or intensive operations, it needs to be given due importance to minimize the safety hazards that will affect the entire factory. Historically, many factories and industrial places have experienced huge losses due to significant safety lapses in their warehouses.
Warehouse safety hazards and prevention
There are multiple exposures to hazards with in a warehouse. Probably, the most dangerous one is a fire hazard. Fire hazard can be minimized with adequate inspection of fire controlling tools such as fire extinguishers and hoses. Many firefighting techniques and drills should be conducted in the factory regularly to make the workers aware of the fire fighting processes.
In many process industries, chemical hazards pose a big threat to the safety and well-being of workers in warehouses. As a warehouse is the storing place for many hazardous chemicals, proper chemical inventories and sufficient information about the chemicals should be in place. In cases of an emergency, chemicals should have proper labels to identify them immediately in order to remove them from hazardous places.
Many industrial warehouses use conveyors and belts to transfer the finished products from the production line to logistical counter ports. In the same way, raw materials are also sent from the warehouse to an operation line for processing. To prevent accidents due to mechanical hazards, proper inspection of conveyor lines and safety floor tapes should be implemented. Machines like forklifts will be used to lift the finished products and any malfunctioning of the forklift in the middle of an operation may lead to accidents. These kinds of heavy machineries that will be used in warehouses should be checked and logs such as maintenance logs and tool logs should be updated periodically.
Electrical safety is also important for the safety of a warehouse and proper circuit designs and tools should be used in order to prevent any electrical short circuits. Foam tool organizers should be used to distinguish the type of tools that will be used in different divisions of a factory. So a warehouse should also contain a foam tool organizer for keeping the tools in proper placement so that they can be used immediately when needed.
Ergonomic design is a new inclusion to the warehouse safety. New industrial safety designs mainly concentrate on the safety of warehouse operations. Ergonomic designs are designs that give importance to the smaller aspects of industrial safety such as proper lighting, removal of sharp edges in a warehouse, installation of automatic gates etc. Thus it is clearly evident that warehouse safety has arrived to center stage to ensure safety at every step in industrial operations.
